The Black Death darkened the doors of many towns and cities repeatedly over the centuries. In the 1340s the cities of Venice, Padova and Florence were engulfed by the plague. A year or so later it reached London. In Florence poet and writer Giovanni Boccaccio wrote the ‘Decameron’ about a group of young people retreating to a villa outside the city to survive the plague.
