January 2025
In August this year I’ll be back at St Hugh’s College, Oxford University. It’ll be like coming home, I studied here at St Hugh’s in the early 1980s – a long time ago now. Three years of undergraduate life, over in the blink of an eye. After all as George Bernard Shaw famously remarked “youth is wasted on the young”.
I think education in my case, probably was too. So now, somewhat ironically, I’ll be back in Oxford four decades later. I’ll be hosting a ‘Residency’ for Creative Writing students from Alma College, Michigan. This event is the latest European edition of a very special collaboration between the ‘Program Director’ Sophfronia Scott and myself. Sophfronia and I have had a long and fruitful partnership together that began in Chicago a decade ago. It was a meeting of minds between Harvard and Oxford! I’ve actually written about our meeting here: When Janet met Sophfronia…..
An outline of the ‘Residency programme’ is here:
This event is in association with Alma College, Michigan. We continue to support and partner with Alma College, Michigan to deliver both ‘Summer’ and ‘Winter Residency’ programmes in the coming years. The next residency in Europe will be at St Hugh’s College, Oxford University (my alma mater) in August 2025.
These European residencies are for students studying for a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing. It is open to all Alma MFA students, both past and present. Check out the Alma College website for more details: www.alma.edu
We are very much looking forward to spending much of August in Oxford.
