[…] It’s worth thinking about the history of The Biennale in Venice. The original Art Exhibition was in 1895 – the idea was to present modern Italian art to a global market. However it quickly transformed into an international modern art event. With just a few gaps, during the war years of 1914-18 and 1939-45 the event has taken place every other year ever since. Apart from Covid – that put a spanner in the works. But since then ‘The Biennale’ is back. A special mention has to go to Peggy Guggenheim, a superlative collector of 20th century art, who was invited to exhibit her own private collection at ‘The Biennale’ in the late 1940s. La Peggy already had a breath-taking collection of art (displayed in her palace on the Grand Canal), including Van Gogh, Miro, Chagall, Kempinski, Matisse, Picasso and Max Ernst. And now that I’ve actually visited the Peggy Guggenheim Museum with you, all I can say is “WOW!” Such a collection of modern art, and I didn’t even consider myself a fan! Thank you for our trip and for this blog post as a reminder and wonderful background stories!
