I agree, a MOST readable piece indeed. I was quite fascinated, as you rightly guessed I would be. However, I am ashamed to confess, despite my assumed name, that I have yet to visit Highclere. To do so is now firmly on my list!!!

I have taken the liberty of copying this to a colleague called Clare, not only because she is interested in historical items of this nature, but also because all my correspondence with her always starts “Downton” (i.e. Phonetic shorthand for “Hi, Claire”), which started as a little joke, but has become a standing greeting!) (Do read Janet’s post, Claire – you will appreciate my congratulations on her writing style!)

We still regularly trot out happy reminiscences of our fabulous stay in Verona!
